Even non-technical personnel that work in the petroleum industry need to have a basic understanding of the oil and gas field. Anyone searching for an interesting and practical environment in which they can learn a foundation of these principles should consider attending the Fundamentals of the Petroleum Industry class this September 13-15 at Signa Engineering Corp. offices in Houston, Texas.

The three-day course presents the multi-disciplined aspects of oil and gas exploration, reservoir fundamentals, drilling and completion of wells and production of hydrocarbons.

From an introduction of the oil industry at Spindletop at the turn of the Twentieth Century, to a comprehensive look at offshore drilling and production, this course educates attendees about the entire petroleum industry in an applied, interesting manner. Participation should result in greater job confidence, enthusiasm and productivity.

Candidates for the class include anyone who needs to understand the petroleum industry. New members of the industry will be given a great introduction. Marketing personnel will grasp the intricacies of how the products they market come to exist. Service workers (brokerage, software, consulting, etc.) will also learn a basic foundation of the industry.

The class has been taught around the globe, typically on location at major and smaller oil companies, including Mobil in New Orleans, AGIP in Nigeria, Addax Petroleum in Yangon Myanmar, and Pertamina and CalTex in Jakarta. Companies interested in presenting the course at their location can contact Signa Engineering for information on tailor-made classes.

The course will cover terms and definitions, petroleum geology (origins and accumulation of petroleum, traps, pressures), Reservoirs (types, reservoir fluids, drive mechanisms), Exploration (planning, data acquisition, drilling methods, evaluation and interpretation), Production Methods, Offshore Drilling and Production, Transportation, Refining and Processing, and Environmental (safety and health).

Attendees will finish the course with an understanding of:

  1. The role of oil and natural gas as our main source of energy
  2. Everyday terms and jargon of the industry
  3. The complexity and operations involved with finding and producing hydrocarbons
  4. The integration of activities that make up the industry
  5. The dedication required from every individual to make an operation efficient and profitable
